Comedian Laurence Clark Demonstrates Why He Hates Being Called “Inspiring”

The British comedian Laurence Clark can quite properly be called a searing political satirist.   His humor is irreverent, pertinent and sometimes biting.  His stand up comedy has been described as  having the power to shock, to force a sharp intake of breath and to change minds while never lecturing and never being less than funny.

If you have a disability  and have been told you are “inspiring” or know someone who has — watch Laurence lampoon this sentiment.

E-readers as a Dyslexia Tool

At Disability*Blog, guest blogger, Varda Epstein, Education and Communications Writer for Kars4Kids had this to say about E-Readers.

The minute e-readers came on the market educators were exploring the inherent possibilities. Neither a book nor a computer, but something in between, e-readers offered hope that the printed word would not yet die out, but would be made accessible to digital natives in a digestible form. More to the point, educators wondered if e-reader technology might make texts accessible to those with reading difficulties such as dyslexia.

FBI Report Shows Increase in Hate Crimes against People with Disabilities

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released a report on the number of hate crimes committed during 2012.  Crimes against people with disabilities accounted for 1.6 percent of incidents, nearly twice as many as were reported in 2011 even as the total number of hate crimes nationwide declined. The FBI said that 82 of the incidents were related to mental disability and 20 were related to physical disability.

Statistics released November 25  from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program indicate that there were 102 hate crime offenses reported in 2012 based on disability bias. That’s up from 58 the year before.

Overall, 5,796 criminal incidents reported last year were motivated by a bias toward a particular race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity/national origin or disability. In 2011, there were 6,222 cases.
